Roten's father, John Bryant, son of Lavinia Bryant, moved away from Cocke County after most of his children were grown. In addition to Roten, these siblings also stayed in Cocke County: John Jr., James and Alice Eslinger. Their brother Dan lived in Rockwood (Roane Co.). Their mother was Martha Carson.

Roten Bryant married Jane Dennis Dec. 26, 1883 in Cocke Co., Tenn.

In 1910 (census data) Roten and Jane (both listed at age 48) were living in the English Creek Community of Cocke County with children Ida, Osborne, Ollie and Tillman. (An older daughter, Margaret [Chrisman], had married and left home.)
