Frederick "Fritz" Buhlman immigrated from Switzerland to Iowa Falls, Iowa in March 1851 with his large extended family. By 1855, the Buhlman family had relocated and established roots in Saux City, Wisconsin. Buhlman would later later relocate nearby to the newly-established town of Waunakee. There, he established a dry goods store in the spring of 1871, purchasing the first commercial lot on it new Main Street. By 1871, he was joined in the business by his younger brother Jacob, thereby forming the Buhlman Dry Goods store. In 1879, the brothers opened a new brick-front store across the street at 121 West Main Street, converting their original building into a creamery.

Frederick and his wife Rosa Antelman (1852 -1912) had seven children: Frederick, Ruth, Anna (Anne), Edward, Elizabeth, Agnes and Charles. Three of these children died in early childhood from diphtheria.

Buhlman retired from his business in 1900 at the age of 70. His brother, Jacob and sister, Margaret would later gain complete control of the business, operated it until Jacob's retirement in 1926.

Frederick later moved to Sullivan, Wisconsin to live with family members, where he died in 1912.
