John McNair Picken, 74, of Rockford, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in Rosewood Care Center after a lengthy illness. Born July 31, 1924, in Rockford, son of Ralph Montgomery and Bernice McNair Picken. Graduated from West High School in 1942 and University of Illinois in 1948. Member of Phi Delta Theta. He served in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of second lieutenant. Married Sally Katherine Lofquist in Rock Island in 1948; she died in August 1980. Married Nancy (Dickinson) Tenney in Lake Geneva, Wis., in 1988. President of Rockford Board of Realtors in 1965. Named Realtor of the Year in 1981. Member of Illinois Association of Realtors, serving as president in 1975. Named State Realtor of the Year in 1981. Member of National Association of Realtors, serving as director from 1973 to 1984. Also served on the Illinois Property Tax Appeals Board from 1990 to 1991. Member of Civic League, serving on its Board of Director: Rockford Memorial Education Foundation, serving as president from 1981 to 1984. Chairman of Rockford Memorial Hospital Fund Raising Drrve in 1969. Member of Second Congregational Church, serving on its Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1982, and was chairman of the Rebuilding Committee from 1981 to 1984, after the church fire, Member of Rotary Club, Rockford Country Club and University Club. Survivors include wife, Nancy; sons, David (Jane) Picken of Rockford, Douglas (Kristi) Picken of Lakeville, Minn.; daughter, Libby (Paul) Knopp of Rockford; grandchildren, Eric and Emity Eickhorst, Kathryn, Allison, Jonathan and Michael Picken; cousins, Robert (Mary) Picken of Rockford, Helen Picken Grogan of Cape Cod, Maine and Barbara Picken Flowers of Winter Park, Fla.; four stepchildren and nine step-greatgrandchildren. Also predeceased by parents.
Services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 in Second Congregational Church, 318 N. Church St., with the Rev. Dr. Bruce Bueschel officiating. The family will greet visitors immediately after the service in the church. After the reception, burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
