She was born on the family farm in Bourbon County, Kansas on February 1, 1872. Her parents were Mary Jane Ingram and Samuel Hamilton Sheppard. Her family members were pioneer's to Virginia and West Virginia. After the end of the Civil War her family moved to Kansas by Wagon.

Her father fought in the civil war, he was in the Confederate Army. His rank was Private in Company F, 17th Virginia Calvery. Her Great Grand Father Jonathan C. Sheppard fought in the Revolutionary War against England.

In the spring 1883 her father went to Idaho where free government land was available for homesteading. He stayed with his sister Elizabeth Winkler, for about 2 years, while he laid his claim to rich farm land. He then returned to home For his wife Mary Jane, his son James, and daughter Tessie. His older son Jacob I Sheppard stayed in Kansas. He was a well known attorney in that area.

On the way back to Idaho, her father got sick with a cold that became pneumonia. Because of the lack of antibiotics he died at the young age of 56. He is buried in Weiser, ID.

Her brother Jim had worked the farm in Kansas, and along with some farm hands they were able to keep the homestead in Idaho operating.

In 1890 Tessie married John Wesley Mitchell in Meadows, Washington County, Idaho. Their first son Albert Jacob Mitchell was born Oct 14, 1891 in Meadows, ID, their 2nd son Samuel Sheppard Mitchell was born Sept 5, 1893, in Idaho.

About 1895 My Great Granparents decided to head for California. They settled in Sonoma County. While the 1900 census list John Wesley Mitchell as a farm laborer by 1910 census they have him listed as a farmer. On February 15, 1896 their 3rd child John Chester Mitchell was born. Unfortunately by June 4, 1996 they lost their first son, Albert Jacob Mitchell. He is buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Windsor, Sonoma County, CA.

Sometime after his death Tessie contracted T.B., she was a patient in a T.B. Sanitarium, in Redlands, CA., when she finally died of the disease.

For years we did not know where Great Grandma Sheppard/Mitchell, was buried or why she died so young. I would like to thank Barbara Sheppard Snyder for that information. Without it we would still be looking.

I would also like to thank Gina & Don Polanshek, for taking time away from their busy day to photograph Tessie grave stone. Words cannot express our appreciation. You did a wonderful job, I am so happy to finally see her final resting place.Thank you.

The search is over, "may you rest in peace".
