James Willis Patterson (13 May 1854 Wilson County, Tennessee - 23 Jan 1916 MT Vernon, Jefferson, Illinois).

James Willis Patterson's father was Joshua L Patterson (3 Oct 1821 Wilson County, Tennessee - 27 Oct 1901 MT Vernon, Jefferson, Illinois) the son of Peter Patterson (born 1768) and Rebecca Turner (born 1775). James Willis Patterson's grandfather, Peter Patterson was disowned by the Quakers of Northhampton, North Carolina "for the disunity he had created" in 1811/1812. Peter moved to Wilson County, Tennessee where he purchased real property there by 1819 per land records and census records of 1830 and 1840. Joshua Patterson and his wife Mary Elizabeth Rickard (1821 – 1876 mother of James Willis Patterson maiden name alternate spelling Ricketts) are seen living with Joshua's father Peter Patterson and mother Rebecca Turner in the 1850 census of Wilson County, Tennessee along his children. By the census of 1860 neither Peter nor Rebecca are recorded, presumably they have passed on by then. After the civil war Joshua and his family were living in Mt Vernon, Jefferson, Illinois at least since 1865 (tax records) and are recorded in the census of 1870 still living together.

On 15 Nov 1877 James Willis Patterson married Sarah Mildred "Sally" Shields (7 May 1857 in Cleveland, Bradley, Tennessee - 28 Feb 1923 in Bluford, Jefferson, Illinois) daughter of Benjamin James Shields (1825 – 1901) and Nancy Eliza Champion (1829 – 1914). He and his family are recorded living in Mount Vernon, Jefferson, Illinois in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census until James Willis Patterson's death 24 Jun 1916. His death records record his burial here along with his parents names and birth place.

James Patterson and Sarah Shields had at least four children who survived infancy:

1) Fred Byron Patterson (1880 – 1941).

2) William Kerr "Ken" Patterson (1890 – 1965).

3) Laura Ruth Patterson (1893 –)

4) Ruby B. Patterson (1897 –).
