Death Comes Early Today; Redouble Murder Hunt - Cigar Shop Operator Mortally Wounded In Loop Store
Edward C. Alexander, 59, one of the most widely known business men in the west side business districkt died shortly after 1 a.m. today at Rockford hospital from the bullet wounds inflicted by bandits when they held him up in his West Side Smoke shop, 314 West State street at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Death ended a losing fight on the part of the popular merchant to live. His condition became worse yesterday and he lapsed into unconsciousness early last night. An oxygen tent had been used throughout the day by physicians in an attempt to save his life.
Mr. Alexander who resided at 1821 Cumberland street is survived by his widow, Mrs Augusta Alexander, a son, Robert, and a daughter, Elizabeth. Mr. Alexander for many years before coming to Rockford operated a store in Argyle, Ill.
