Aug. 1, 1926 - Nov. 9, 2014 PELL CITY – Edith Charlene DeShazer, 88, died Sunday, November 9 of complications from pneumonia. She was with loved ones at home in Pell City, Alabama. Mrs. DeShazer was born in Clearmont, Missouri, August 1, 1926 to Charles Jay and Edith Wallace Smith. Her husband of 56 years, Larkin Porter DeShazer, preceded her in death. Charlene and Larkin "De" met in Kansas City, Missouri. Shortly after their marriage, his job with Frisco/L&N Railroad brought them to Homewood, Alabama where they lived until moving to Pell City in 1978. Members at Trinity in Homewood, upon their move, they joined Pell City First United Methodist Church where Mrs. DeShazer attended services until her health prevented it. Meticulous in everything, Mrs. DeShazer excelled as a pianist until she gave it up to begin sewing professionally. A business college graduate, she managed her son's front office when he established a dental practice in Pell City. Her survivors include a son, Robert Larkin DeShazer (Dianne), Pell City; daughter, Susan Lynn DeShazer, Pell City; granddaughters, Necia Charlene Mathews, Birmingham and Claire DeShazer Leverton (Daniel), Birmingham; nieces and nephews include, Danie Smith (Sandra), Rockport MO; Terry Smith, Jeffersonville, IN.; Susan Frankum (Kris), Maryville, MO.; Rod Smith (Kim), Overland Park, KS.; Michael Smith, Maryville, MO.; and Kathy Smith (Rob), Iowa City, IA. She is preceded in death by her sister, Gertrude Smith; brother, C. Jay Smith and nephew, Richard Smith. A very capable and devoted group of caregivers were with Mrs. DeShazer to the end. Her family deeply appreciates the care, patience and affection Rosiland Jemison, Adrian Taylor, Debbie Hurley, MilAnn Brown and Pat Medley gave their mother and grandmother. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 12 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Kilgroe Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 at the funeral home. Interment will be at Valley Hill Memorial Gardens.
