Katie Briggs Hayes, of Seabeck, WA, died on Nov 7, 2014 from critical injuries sustained in a car accident on Misery Point Rd in Seabeck. She was only 31 years old.
Katie started her life as Kathryn Nicole Redman. She was born to Rick and Kenne (Pearce) Redman on Oct 25, 1983, in Bremerton, WA. Due to life circumstances, Katie was adopted by her new daddy, Wesley Briggs, on Nov 23, 1985, and became Kathryn Nicole Briggs. She moved to central Pennsylvania with her parents in 1985 and lived in Blanchard, PA until her family moved back to Washington in 1992. Settling near Seabeck, Katie attended Seabeck Elementary and Klahowya Secondary Schools. A 2002 graduate, Katie later worked as a substitute custodian in Bremerton School District with her mother, and later at IP Callison & Sons in Lacey, WA. On Aug 10, 2013, Katie married her best friend for life, Jimmie Hayes, at the home of his parents, Jim & Cathy Hayes, of Seabeck. Katie & Jimmie had many common interests like riding on the Harley and playing pool. She also loved to cook for family and friends. Whether smoking a turkey on her cobalt blue Webber grill, steaming crab, or baking a cheesecake from scratch, Katie loved to cook. Besides her family, Katie's greatest love was drag racing. She was introduced to the sport by her biological father, Rick Redman, and she took to it like a duck to water. Racing at Bremerton Raceway in the Sportsman Class, she was runner up in the Wally Cup Finals on Oct 3, 2010 and was voted Rookie of the Year in 2010. In 2013, Katie and Jimmie formed their own race team and with her race car, Karma, Katie set out to make her mark in the drag racing world. In 2014, she qualified for the ET Summit NW Division Finals in Woodburn, OR, representing Team Bremerton Killer Bees. She placed in the top 16 finishers in the Gamblers Race, earning a little money. Back in Bremerton, on Sept 7, 2014, Katie raced in the K&N Filters ET Bracket #15 Race, finishing second and becoming runner up for the Sportsman Class. She was extremely proud of these achievements.
Katie is survived by her husband, Jimmie Hayes, of Seabeck, her parents, Wesley & Kip (Kenne) Briggs, of Seabeck, sisters Jenna & Jacqui Briggs, of Seabeck, brother Kristopher (Jennifer) Crull of Seattle, grandparents Kenneth (Marilyn) Pearce, of Sequim, and her Hayes in-laws, Jim & Cathy Hayes of Seabeck. She is also survived by her sisters in law, Connie Babers, of Silverdale, Brandy Bryant, of Silverdale, and many aunts, uncles and cousins, including Mike, Jani and Josh Briggs of Shelton, WA. She was preceded in death by her nana, Sarah Pearce, of Shelton, pappy Raymond Briggs, of Beech Creek, PA and grandparents Walter and Sally Redman, of Bremerton.
On Nov 6, 2016, almost 2 years to the day after Katie's passing, her biological father, Rick Redman, joined her in the fast lane.
