Harold Arnold, Active Legion Member, Dies

Harold S. Arnold, an active member of Chester County American Legion organizations, died suddenly Thursday while working on construction of his new home near Unionville.

Mr. Arnold, husband of Maryetta Allaband Arnold, was 69 and for the past five years had lived at 20 Parkside rd, Downingtown.

Mr. Arnold was born in Columbia, but lived all of his adult life in Chester County, primarily in the Kennett Square. He was also commissaire intendant of -(Continued on Page 2, Col. 1)- the Societe, 40 and 8, Voiture 376, Chester County.

Mr. Arnold ,a veteran of World War I, joined the Legion in 1919. He served as commander of the Eight District of the American Legion, which includes Chester and Delaware Counties. He was a past chef d'gare of Voiture 6 of the Societe 40 and 8 and finance officer for the Chester County Legion.

He also initiated and promoted the building of the Shadyside Chateau of Voiture 376, contributing much of his own labor to the building in West Bradford township. Mr. Arnold was also a past commander and adjutant of the Valley Forge barracks of the Veterans of World War I.

Other associations with which Mr. Arnold was affiliated include the Odd Fellows, the Kennett Square Fire Co., the Past District Commander's Association, the Squires and Magistrates Association and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Mr. Arnold had been a constable in Kennett Square for 30 years and at the time of his death was a deputy constable.

He was also a member of the 25-year-Club of the State Department of Highways, his lat assignment being assistant district superintendent for the department. He was a member of Kennett Square Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife; four daughters; Cherly Ann, at home; Mrs. Charles Turner, Elsmere, Del.; Mrs. Donald Taylor, Kensosha, Wis.; and Mrs. George Reutter, Hockessin, Del.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three brothers; Cleon L., Coatesville, RD 1; Clarence, West Chester; and, Arthur, Thorndale.
