Marilla was born on 5 April 1857, daughter of Joseph Harrison Kissick and Cynthia Ann Garvin. It was reported in newspapers that she died tragically near Princeton, Illinois, on 19 February 1880; that while attempting to protect her mother, she was shot by her uncle Ambrose D. Garvin and died instantly. Garvin, described as an ex-soldier of unsavory reputation, then shot himself through the head, inflicting a wound from which he died the next day. However, the newspapers were in error. Marilla recovered. She was married in Bureaud County on 10 June 1880 to Jonathan (John) Hayden. Marilla died on 5 October 1882 preceded and followed by her children: Mary Hayden who died on October 2nd; and William Hayden who died on October 6th.
