Stephen passed away at his mother's home at the age of 40 years.

He was raised in the Oklahoma City area and graduated from Putnam City High School. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1973.

He studied voice with Inez Silbert and Gregory Stapp.
During college he taught voice lessons at Oklahoma City University.

He was a baritone who sang at the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera and with many other companies. He started is career in 1977 with the Houston Grand Opera as Figaro in "Il Barbiere di Siviglia." In 1978 he went on to performed at the Santa Fe Repertoire in "Danae" as Prince Paul, in 1979 he performed at the San Francisco Opera and many other venues.

Stephen first appeared at the New York City Opera in 1980 as Ford in "The Merry Wives of Windsor," and performed there in "Ariadne auf Naxos," "La Boheme," "Les Pecheurs de Perles," "Pagliacci" and "Faust."

His Metropolitan debut was in 1981 in "Die Zauberflote" as Papageno, a role he repeated throughout Europe. Also in 1981 he performed for President Lynden B. an dLady Bird Johnson at the White House and President Ronald and Nancy Regan in 1988.

Survivors include his mother, Bonnie Dickson; sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Michael Hogan and nephew, Shaun Hogan. Preceded in death by his father, Drew Dickson; and brother, William H. Dickson.
