"S E Atherton Died After Long Illness - S Edward Atherton, aged 83, died at his home, 111 East Spruce place, at 3 o'clock yesterday morning. He had been an invalid for fifteen years and almost helpless for several years. The deceased was son of Stephen and Almeda Dix Atherton and was born in Rome township about two miles east of Centerville, July 15, 1853. When he was a boy, his parents moved to Centerville and most of his life was spent in or near the borough, where he had a wide acquaintance. On May 23, 1888, Mr Atherton was married to his boyhood sweetheart, Miss Artie Wetherbee, whose home was near that of the Atherton farm, and she survives him, with one daughter, Mrs Hazel Hoak, who lives with her parents. Two of the Atherton children, Elmer and Carl, succumbed to influenza in the epidemic of 1918, in Dunkirk, NY, and another son, Karl (sic) [Earl], died in infancy. Mr and Mrs Atherton came to Titusville to reside about twenty years ago. Besides the wife and daughter, there is a grandson, Frederick Hoak, and two granddaughters, Mrs Robert McConnell and Mrs Harold Ries, both of Chicago. There are two brothers, Alonzo Atherton of Titusville and Harry Atherton of Grand Valley, and a sister, Mrs Eugenia Van Tassel of Riceville. Mr Atherton was a member of the First Baptist church. The body was prepared for interment at the E L Cummins funeral home and will be taken to the family home today. Services in his memory will be conducted from the Centerville Baptist church at 2:30 pm, Friday, with Rev T D Edwards of the local Baptist church, officiating, and interment will be made in Sunnyside cemetery."
