James E. Alexander, 89, a local care home resident, died Monday evening after a long illness. Services are pending at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Mr. Alexander was born Aug. 12, 1888, at Hershey, the son of James and Susa Alexander. The fmily moved to Wymore, where he attended school. On Jan. 9, 1916, he married Florence Scoville at Broken Bow. They lived in western Nebraska where they farmed until moving to Grand Island in the early 1920's. He was a mechanic and operated a trucking business here. They later moved to Burwell where he farmed, then moving to Doniphan and returning to Grand Island. Mrs. Scoville died in 1974. Mr. Alexander was a Methodist Church member.

Survivors include four sons, Donald of Grand Island, Lee of Trenton, Ralph of Downers Grove, Ill., and James of Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Doris) Spellman of Alma, Mrs. Floyd (Ruth) Compton of Concord, Calif., and Mr. Chester (Betty) Thaden of Craig; 24 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Arthur (Helen) Chaplin of Lincoln.
