JOHN J. ANDREW PASSES AWAY
Was Farmer, Merchant, School Teacher and Later Manufacturer.
Died Last Night at 10:30 O'clock.
Leaves Four Sons and a Daughter.
John J. Andrew, 525 North Church Street, died at his home last night at 10:30 o'clock passing away suddenly of heart trouble. Death was unexpected by his family, although he had been in feeble health for some time. He was able to be about yesterday.
Mr. Andrew was born in Argyle, Scotland, and was the son of David Andrew, who emigrated to America, in 1842, staying in the east and then moving to Winnebago County, where, in 1843, he took up a farm at Guilford. There were thirteen children in the family. John had been educated in the schools of Scotland and after coming to this country he was sent for one summer to Beloit College. He was a very accomplished student and during the spring and summer he assisted on the farm and in the winter he taught school until 1853, when he married and moved to Rockford. His wife was Mary J. Enoch of Guilford, who died five years ago.
When Mr. Andrew first came to Rockford he engaged in the meat and provision business, remaining in it for 35 years and occupying a store on West State Street, He afterwards engaged in the manufacture of soap, his factory being located in Riverside, and he remained in this business until 1903 when he disposed of his plant and retired.
For many years Mr. Andrew was a member of the Court Street M. E. Church, being choirmaster of the old church. He was also treasurer of the society and a member of the board of trustees. Four sons and a daughter mourn his death. They are H. D, Freed and Miss Minnie Andrew of Rockford and Frank H. and Dr. J. D. Andrew of Chicago.
If Mr. Andrew had lived until this fall he would have been 85 years old. In his death the Court Street M. E. Church loses one of its most loyal member, and the community a man of scrupulous honesty and exemplary character. Two brothers and three sisters also survive him.
William Andrew, a brother, owns the homestead and family farm in Guilford, and is now retired, residing at 512 Olive Street; Archibald Andrew, the other brother, resides in Milwaukee, where he was school superintendent for many years. The three sisters are Mrs. Daniel Sellers of North Second Street; Mrs. Maria Reid of Springville, Ia,; and Mrs. Jane Knight, who lives in Nebraska. The funeral will probably be held on Sunday afternoon. Rev. James M. Taber is to officiate.
