Daniel Groves, born between 1776 and 1778 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Daniel was the son of Marcus (MARKS) GROVE/GROFF/GROF (1739-1808) and his second wife Mary Strickler (1740-1794)his cousin.

Daniel's father Marcus was married first to Susannah Elizabeth Rhodes, with whom he had three children David, Barbara and Christian. Susannah was one of the victims of the Rhodes Family Massacre in 1767 in Shenandoah Valley. Daniel is listed as a son of Marks (Marcus) Grove on page 421 in the book "Genealogy of the Stukey, Ream, Grove, Clem and Denniston Families". His number is 9365 in this Genealogy.

Daniel married Sarah R. Smith (1790-1860)in Fauguier County Virginia on 27 Aug 1810 and together they had four children: Richard (b. after 1808 - d. 1880), Leah 1811-1881, Thomas (1828-1870) and Emily born in 1831.Daniel GROVES, served in the War of 1812 as a Private, musician (drummer) in the Virginia Militia, under Capt. Thomas Brooks' company to the 2nd Virginia Regiment under the command of Lt. Col. Thomas Ballowe from Buckingham County. He became sick at Camp Holly, Richmond, Henrio, Virgina, and died there Dec. 14, 1814.

On this 4th day of June 1853 personally came before me a Justice of the Peace, Robert and James Embrey. They both were in the War of 1812, with Daniel Groves of Fauquier County, that he was taken sick at Camp Holly and died there in the fall of 1814. They also state that Sarah Groves, the widow of Daniel Groves, NEVER REMARRIED.

On this 2nd day of July A.D., 1855, personally appeared before me, Sarah Groves, aged 60 years, a resident of Fauquier County, Virginia, widow of Daniel Groves, deceased, who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Brooks, in the regiment of Virginia Militia, commanded by Col. Thomas Ballowes, in the war of 1812; declares that she was married to the said Daniel Groves, that her maiden name was SARAH ARROWSMITH, that her said husband died in the year 1814 and that she is now a widow.
