Veteran Civil War - Co D 38th Iowa Infantry

Luther was the son of Joseph Barrett and Mehitable Noyes. He married Ida Westbrook on March l6, 1862 in Winneshiek Co, Iowa. They were the parents of Charles, Jay L. (1866), Mae or Mary E (1868 - 1931 IA, William Eade), and Edna (adopted).

January 30, 1908 - Humboldt Independent - Luther C. Barrett was born in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., on October 3rd, 1843, where he lived until he was fifteen years old when he moved with his parents to Winneshiek County, Iowa.

He was married in that County March l6th, 1862, to Miss Almeda Westbrook who survives him. To this union three children were born, Charles who passed to the "Great Beyond" ten years ago, Jay who lives at Mae, Minnesota, and came to care for him 2 months before he died and Mrs. Sherman Eade who also lives in Minnesota, and Edna, an adopted daughter who lives with them.

Mr. Barrett enlisted in August 1862, in Company D 38th Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served three years and six months. In 1866 he, with his family, moved to Humboldt County and settled in Vernon Township, on what was known to all old settlers as "Prairie Creek".

In those days when there was none of the conveniences of today when the settlers had to go many miles to market and to mill. Mr. Barrett and his good wife always had room for "one more" in their tiny pioneer cabin, and no one can say they were ever turned away hungry from their door.

Mr. Barrett has been a great sufferer for the past three years from dropsy and other complications and a short time ago he went to the hospital at Marshalltown in hopes of getting relief but he failed rapidly after going to the hospital and death came to his relief on Wednesday morning, January 22nd, 1908.

He was a member of Albert Rowley Post G.A.R. and was buried from the Congregational church at Humboldt Iowa, on Friday, January 24th, 1908 under the auspices of the Post and laid at rest in the family lot in Union Cemetery beside the oldest son. Reverently we may say: "Peace to his ashes."Luther C Barrett
