BENTON -- Delbert J. Bowlin, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at his home in Benton. He was born Saturday, Feb. 6, 1926, in Du Quoin, to William and Emma (Phiffer) Bowlin. He was a member of West City Church of God and was a coal miner. Mr. Bowlin served in the Navy during World War II Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Sharon and Duane Sims of Benton, Sue Darnell of Metropolis, Rhonda and Clyde Childers of Valier, Tammy Hungate of Sesser, and one son, Ronald and Brandy Pierce of Benton; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild. He was married to Sandy (Black) Bowlin on Sept. 26, 1939, (sic.) in Mattoon. She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers and sisters; one daughter, Lisa Sanders; one son, Anthony Pierce; and one granddaughter, Shelly Darnell. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Van Natta Funeral Home in Mulkeytown located on Illinois 148 between Christopher and Sesser, with the Rev. Harold Whitlock officiating. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Military rites will be preformed by the Christopher American Legion and VFW honor detail. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 6, at the funeral home.
