John Claycomb, a veteran of the Civil War and a well-known resident of the seventh ward, died at the Memorial Hospital at noon today, aged 72. He was operated on a few weeks ago for cancer, which is thought to have developed soon after an operation performed two years ago, for kidney trouble. He had been a patient at the hospital since January 12, and displayed unusual vitality for a man of his years. The deceased was a native of Alum Bank, Bedford County, where he was born August 20 1841. For a number of years he was engaged in business as an undertaker at Osterburg. In addition he was a carpenter of considerable skill. He came to Johnstown in 1888. Of late he has been employed as janitor of the Meadowvale public school building. Since the death of his wife in 1910, Mr. Claycomb had made his home with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rohde, of Oak Street, seventh ward. These brothers and sisters survive Mr. Claycomb: Henry, of Alum Bank; Mrs. Archibald Rigg, of Altoona; Mrs. Berkheimer and Mrs. George Hull, of Osterburg. The following children also survive, in addition to 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren: Mandilla, wife of Frank Trout, of Wood Street; May, wife of George Wright, of Wood Street; Flora, wife of Harry Jacoby, of Walnut Grove; Ella, wife of Harry Rohde; Atchison, of Wheeling, W.VA.; Humphrey, of Homer Street; and Virginia, wife of Albert Snowberger, of Cleveland, Ohio. The body has been taken to the home of Mrs. Rohde, but funeral arrangements had not been completed this afternoon.
