Virginia Lee Gilliland Baker, 74, of Huntsville died Tuesday. Ginger was born in Lawrence, Kan. She attended the University of Kansas and was a member of Tri-Delta sorority. She married her high school sweetheart in 1956 and then worked as a secretary to put him through engineering school. They had their first child during this time. Being an aeronautical engineer's wife, she moved on to West Palm Beach, Fla., where she had two more children. From there, they packed up the family and moved with the babies to Seattle. They ultimately landed in Huntsville, which became their home of 47 years. Ginger worked for the Huntsville Board of Realtors for many years while her children were young and later became involved in volunteer work for the Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary and the Huntsville Botanical Garden. When her children were grown and gone, she and her husband traveled the world. She enjoyed scuba diving, and playing Mah Jongg with her close group of girlfriends but most of all she loved her family. Ginger was preceded in death by her mother and father, Floyd and Gladys Gilliland of Tonganoxie, Kansas. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Jim Baker; three daughters, Vicki Ryan and her husband Rick of Madison, Kathy Brockway and her husband Bobby of Fayetteville, Ark., and Kelly Baker of Mobile; four grandchildren, Jamie Glover, B.J. Ryan, Sarah Ryan and Aaron Ryan; and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of Ginger's life will be held Sunday at the Monte Sano United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Clem officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations be made to the Monte Sano United Methodist Church, 601 Monte Sano Blvd. S.E., Huntsville, AL 35801.
