George married Anna Griffith, d/o William & Mary "Polly" Abney Griffith, May 19, 1849. Although they never had any children of their own they raised 13 orphaned children as their own.

In 1847, at the age of 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Mexican War as a member of Co. L, under Col. Butler in the historic Palmetto Regiment.

George enlisted again in 1861 at age 33 at Chambers Cp. AL as 1st Sergeant in Capt. Faulkner's Calvary Co. which became Co. B, 8th Regiment, Alabama Calvary, CSA. He then move to Co. A, 5th Battalion Hillard's Legion which became Co. A 10th Alabama Calvary. After the War he moved to Mississippi.

He was postmaster at Abney, Fulton Co.,MS.
