Bill was the oldest son of Ernest Clifton Black and Mae Savage Black. He had four sisters, two brothers, and two older half-brothers. (William's original birth name was Billy Boozer Black. Dr Boozer was a prominent doctor in town. But as an adult, he changed his name to William Black, sometimes seen as William B Black. This of course complicates his records but it was important to him. He remained "Uncle Bill" throughout his life.) He graduated from Auburn University in 1940 in Forestry. He enlisted in the Army during WW2 and was a staff sergeant. Bill married Edna Morris in 1947 and Johnnye Collins in 1960. Johnnye was very devoted to him and their marriage lasted almost 30 years until his death. Bill loved his many nieces and nephews and gave them special attention.
