Joseph “Joe” Lee Barton, SMSgt USAF RET., age 78, of Altus, passed away Friday, November 8, 2013, at the Veteran’s Hospital, in Oklahoma City.

Mr. Barton was born on March 19, 1935, in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Joseph and Viola Barton. His mother divorced when he was a young boy and he was raised in McAlester by his step-mother, Edith Sharp Barton. Joe was a newsboy during World War II, to defense workers at McAlester Naval Ammunition Depot. In 1949, he began his military career in the Oklahoma National Guard 45th Infantry Division. He graduated from McAlester High School with the class of 1953. In 1954, he attended Eastern Oklahoma A & M College under the Korean G.I. Bill for one year. Joe graduated from Western Oklahoma State College with the class of 1975 and from Cameron University with the class of 1984 with a BA degree in Art. Joe was a veteran of the Korean Conflict era, serving in Korea with the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division. In February 1958, he transferred to the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in Vietnam with the Military Advisory Command Vietnam, MACV, preparing visual aids as illustrator/draftsman for the commander and his staff. During that tour he received the Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three campaign stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallant Cross with palm and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. In 1967, he was assigned to Tokyo Japan as a branch chief, Hqs 5th Air Base Group Comptroller Division as NCOIC base graphics. In 1977, he became Detachment Chief of Det. 41365th Audiovisual Squadron which was responsible for all photo, film library and graphics support to Altus AFB. He retired December 1, 1980, with nearly thirty years total service. Following retirement he did some freelance art work as an illustrator and began to work for a degree in Art at Cameron University studying under the Vietnam G.I. Bill. After finishing his studies at Cameron, he returned to W.O.S.C. and received his second degree, AS in drafting and design. He married Marie Ricci Rich, at McAlester, Oklahoma on June 7, 1958, and she preceded him in death on May 9, 1988.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers, John Mason Barton and Freddie Barton, he is survived by four children, Joey Barton of Altus, Juanita Smith and husband William of Altus, Louis Barton and wife Sheila of Aynor, South Carolina and Angela Winters of Frankfort, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Michael Smith, Will Smith, Nicholas Barton, Olivia Barton, Madison Barton, Jacob Barton, Ryan Barton and Holly Marie Winters; two sisters, Charlene Schmidt and Janice Stacey of California; one brother, Charles Barton of California along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Joseph Lee Barton will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
