TRUCK RAMS PARKED AUTO; BOY, 10, DIES

Rockville (Special) - A 10-year-old Prince Georges county boy was killed and six members of his family were injured early yesterday when a tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of their car after the boy's father pulled off on the shoulder of Interstate 270 to rest, State Police reported.
Investigating troopers said Nicholas Paul Basta, of Glenn Dale, was pronounced dead at the scene about 1:40 a.m. The tractor-trailer hit the left rear side of the family's 1975 Chrysler on I-270 about a mile north of Route 109, near the Montgomery country-Frederick county line, police said.
The father, Franklin George Basta, 33, was flown to the Institute for Emergency Medical Services, the shock-trauma unit at University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with head and chest injuries.
Police said the boy who died was sitting in the rear left seat of the car, near the point of impact, when the tractor-trailer, operated by Robert James Santa, 39, of Enola, Pa., crossed two lanes and collided with the Bastas' car, parked on the left shoulder of the highway.
The impact pushed the car about 450 feet along the road, investigators reported. The tractor-trailer overturned after the collision, they said.
The truck driver, who was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital, and released, was charged with failure to reduce speed and with failing to drive in a single lane.
Gloria Basta, 33, the dead boy's mother, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was admitted to the hospital in Frederick with head injuries and was listed in satisfactory condition last night.
The couple's 11-year-old son, Franklin George, Jr., who was in the back seat, was in stable condition with head and chest injuries at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Gaithersburg.
Mr. and Mrs. Basta's three other children were treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital and released. They are: Nicole Yvette, 2, who was sitting in between her mother and father in the front seat, and Michael Christopher, 8, and Michelle Nicole, 4, who were both in the back seat.
