By the spring of 1915 Herman was depressed and despondent. He was working as a night watchman for the railroad and living in a boarding house run by Ida Summers in Burlington, Iowa. Herman developed a crush on Ida, and he became jealous when another man came to court her. In a rage, Herman shot and killed Ida before turning the gun on himself.
Ida's estate subsequently sued Herman's estate for $1000.00. After a negotiated settlement, Herman's estate paid Ida's heirs $525.10 for damages.
Herman's family was in disbelief and never spoke of what had happened. They buried Herman next to Rhoda at Prairie Grove Cemetery. Herman rests in an unmarked grave.
