ACCIDENTAL DROWNING

Melvin Floyd Went Down in Fifteen Feet of Water Last Sunday Afternoon.

Melvin Floyd, fourteen years of age, was drowned in the reservoir on Dr. C.E. Still's farm about one quarter mile west of Dr. Still's residence, about 4:30 p.m.. last Sunday.

In company with several other boys he had gone in the reservoir to bathe; he and two or three others had started to swim across the pond when well out, he was heard to tell the other boys that he could not make it across; and he sank for the third time, before assistance could be rendered him.

The water where he went down is about fifteen feet deep. A search for the body was at once instituted, and marshal Porter was notified of the accident. A boat was sent for and hooks and ropes were secured, and a systematic dragging of the pond was begun. By this time it was dark and the rain had begun falling.

Some diving was done, but as there were brush and stumps in the bottom of the pond, the divers could not go to the bottom without striking the brush.

About 8:30 Roy Stuyvesant, who was in the boat, made a dive to the bottom and as he came up thought he touched the body with his feet. The hook was let down and the body was drawn up and put in the boat. It was taken to Kent's undertaking rooms where it was prepared for burial.

The funeral was conducted from the residence of his sisters, Misses Lillie and Minnie, at 301 N. Main street, at 3 p.m. Monday, by Elder H.A. Northcutt. The body was laid to rest in the old cemetery.

Melvin was a son of the late Simeon Floyd; his parents are both dead. He was at the time of his death bell boy at the Pool Hotel, and was a general favorite among the hotel guests. He was a bright, hard working boy, and his loss will be felt keenly by his sisters, and his other relatives and acquaintances.

The sum of $48.15 was subscribed by the patrons and proprietor of the hotel, and by the citizens for the funeral expenses. $25 of this was paid to Mr. Kent, and the balance was sent to the bereaved sisters. Under the circumstances, this was a very commendable act.

An inquest was not thought necessary by Coroner Wilcox, and none was held as it would have made unnecessary expense for the county.
