Ric Ryan Backman, of St. George, Utah passed away October 26, 2014 after 5 valiant years battling cancer. Born May 6, 1947 to Edwin R. & Laile G. Backman in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married his sweetheart Claudia Campbell Backman on November 6, 1968 in Rancho Cordova, CA, and again on May 15, 1993 in Littleton, CO.

After graduating from West High School in Salt Lake City, he enlisted in The United States Marine Corps and served honorably in the Vietnam War. Ric was awarded a Bronze Star for “Heroic Achievement” and a Purple Heart for being wounded in combat leaving him a double amputee. He literally wore his patriotic love of country on his legs (the American Flag and Marine Corps patches decorated his prosthetic legs). Ric was an avid golfer. In his passion and dedication to the game of golf he obtained a handicap of 9. He is remembered for his sense of humor and positive attitude in the face of every challenge, never complaining and working through every obstacle with determination and dignity. He is loved and admired by all who know him. Ric’s grandchildren lovingly called him “Papa.”

Ric earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Denver Technical College while working as an Administrative Officer for the USDA-APHIS, retiring after 25 years. He then worked for 7 years as a supervisor for Jackson Hewitt.

He is survived by his wife Claudia Backman of St. George, Utah; his children: Burke (Lisa Barela) Backman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Richaile (David) Park of Riverton, Utah; Colby (Lynette Law) Backman of Ivins, Utah; Kindra (Robert) Celani of St. George, Utah; his grandchildren: Mykayla, David Jr., Bryanna, and Joshua (Park), Kylie, Madison, Ethan, Abby, Olivia, and Caden (Backman); and Dante, Thane, and Mianna (Celani); his brother Beau Backman (Maribel) of Sandy, Utah. He is preceded in death by his parents Edwin R. & Laile G. Backman and Brother Jan J. Backman.

Funeral Services and full military honors for our fallen Marine will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 11:00am at the Angel Arch LDS Chapel, 1483 W. Angel Arch Dr., St. George, UT in Sun River. There will be a viewing held at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff, St. George, UT on Friday October 31, 2014 from 6-8pm and also on Saturday morning prior to services from 9:30-10:30 am at the chapel. Interment will take place in the Tonaquint Cemetery.
