He was born in Staunton, Virginia, on June 17, 1917, and made his home on the Peninsula for the past 40 years.
Mr. Miller served in World War II and was a survivor when the CV5 Yorktown was sunk in the battle of Midway. He published a book of experiences growing up on the farm, the Navy, and meeting his beloved Nellie. He was a Certified Master Watchmaker and Clockmaker who founded the Virginia Horological Association and served as their president. Mr. Miller owned and operated Miller's Jewelers in Waynesboro, Virginia, before coming to the Peninsula. He was an airplane pilot for Modern Machine, repairing electronic bell carollions all over the United States, east of the Mississippi. He loved flying and also owned his own plane. Following retirement as an engineer from Modern Machine and Tool Company, he continued repairing clocks until his stroke in July, 2011.
Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Nellie A. Miller.
He is survived by his three children, daughters, Martha S. Miller and Patsi C. Benson of Newport News; and his son, John D. Miller III of Verona, Virginia. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jon B. Benson, Wendy E. Atkinson, Robert D. Miller, Jennifer Hatter and Dean Turner; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at Weymouth Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2012, at St. Mark Lutheran Church with Military Honors at 118 Old York-Hampton Highway in Yorktown, VA 23692. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012, at St. James Lutheran Church, 320 St. James Road, Fishersville, VA 22939, where a funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the family plot at the church cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be sent to St. Mark Lutheran Church or St. James Lutheran Church in his name.
