He married 7 Jun 1848, Elizabeth J Bailes (should be Elizabeth Jane Bales), b in 1825; died 15 Feb 1900, the daughter of A Bailes.

In 1830, James came with his parents to Jefferson County, IN and about 1835, they moved to Shelby County, IN.

James and Elizabeth had the following issue:
2nd child - William Abijah, b 1850, m Anna Phillips (should be William H Means and Mary Ann Phillips)
