Alex was named after the close friend of his father, Will Dockery, of the Dockery Plantation, located near Cleveland, Mississippi. Both his father and Mr. Dockery were in the cotton business.

Alex was on the faculty of Delta State Teacher's College, which later became Delta State University, located in Cleveland, Mississippi. He later was a farm insurer for New York Life.
