Gladys Elizabeth Dement Smith, 104, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Cabin John, Md., died of heart failure, Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Home, Hagerstown.

She was born Dec. 24, 1892, in Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Reginald "Reggie" Smith, in 1977.

During World War II, she worked at the U.S. Navy David Taylor Model Basin, where she remained until 1957 when she retired from government service.

She was one of the original organizers of the Cabin John Park Citizens' Association. She was a charter member of Potomac Valley Homemakers Club and a life member of Order of the Eastern Star, Kensington Chapter. She also was involved in local church activities and numerous antique and classic car clubs, along with her husband.

She is survived by 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by two daughters, Charlotte Smith Bortz and Jean Smith Summerlin; and two sons, Charles R. "BeeBee" Smith Jr. and William Donald Smith.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Parklawn Memorial Park, 12800 Viers Mill Drive, Rockville, Md. The Rev. Thomas L. Brunkow will officiate.

Visitation will be at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Tuesday from noon to 5 p.m.
