Martine Johnson was born in Hurdal’s Parish, Norway, Sept. 26, 1850. On Jan. 21, 1874, she was united in marriage to Hans Amundson of the same parish. On May 17, 1883, they, with their three children, came to America and located east of Clermont. For several years the family lived at different places in Clayton county, until they purchased a home about six miles east of Clermont. On this farm, now occupied by their son, Henry and family, they lived for about thirty years, moving to Clermont on May 7, 1920, where they resided up to the time of their death. Her husband preceded her to their heavenly home on Feb. 2, 1930.
To them were born eleven children, three of whom died in their early childhood. Left to mourn the departure of a loving and faithful mother, are eight children, all of this community. They are: Gunda (Mrs. Ole Gisleson), Adolph, Henry, Louie, Ole, Emma (Mrs. Theo L. Loftsgard), Martin and Louise. Also a sister, Mrs. Anna Nelson, of Hartland, Minn., and twenty-seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, besides other relatives and a large number of friends.
She was a faithful member of, first, the East Clermont Lutheran church, and upon moving to Clermont became a member of the West Clermont Lutheran church in which she held membership until her death. Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. at the home and 1:30 p.m. at the West Clermont Lutheran church, the Rev. E.E. Ramsey officiating. The earthly remains were laid to rest beside that of her husband in the East Clermont Lutheran cemetery.
