Lewis A. Bertram
Lewis, son of Conrad and Elizabeth Gehrig Bertram was born June 26, 1881, in Scotland County near Wyaconda, Missouri. A lifelong resident of this community, he departed this life at his home in Wyaconda, September 13, 1956, at the age of 75 years, two months, and 20 days.
Lewis was the seventh of ten children, all of whom having preceded him in death, excepting one sister, Mrs. Mary Lipps, and one brother Irving Bertram, both of Wyaconda. Also preceding him in death were three half-brothers and one half-sister.
On March 4, 1904, he was united in marriage with Alta Mae Billings. To this union four children were born. One son, Richard preceded him in death on September 9, 1935. Surviving are: three daughters, Rilla Mae Ludwick, Cantril, Iowa; Caldonna Overfield, Memphis, Missouri; and Della Frances Harper, Cantril, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Richard Arlen Bertram; Jerald Dee, Patsy Jo, and J. B. Ludwick; Myrna and Dickie Harper; and Bobby Overfield; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends, each one of whom will long remember his friendly greeting for everyone and his hearty laugh.
In childhood he attended Hicks School in Scotland County. His entire life was spent on a farm near Wyaconda, where he was a prosperous farmer until retirement. Four years ago he and his wife, Alta moved to Wyaconda, where he resided until his death.
Early in life Lewis united with the Methodist Church of Wyaconda and later moved his membership to the Christian Church of Wyaconda.
The funeral was held in the Wyaconda Christian Church at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 16, with Rev. Hollis Bowen of Queen City, a former pastor, officiating.
Interment was in the Wyaconda Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Martin Hines, Homer Guy, Orville St. Clair, Eldon Sturgeon, Robert Knisley, and Howard Decker.
