Monsignor William J. Sears, 71, Englewood, and formerly of Manatee County and Sarasota, died Jan. 8, 2005. He was born March 17, 1933, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Manatee County from 1968 to 1989 before moving to Englewood. He was assistant pastor from 1968 to 1989 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and taught religion at Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota. He was a Naval Reservist from 1963 to 1967, serving as a Marine chaplain during the Vietnam War. He was a member and chaplain of Diego Caravan 255 of the International Order of the Alhambra. Survivors include sisters Helen Wagner of Bradenton and Rita Lownes of Dewey, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews, including Rita Montemagno of Sarasota. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brown and Sons Funeral Homes, 26th Street Chapel, Bradenton. A Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Sarasota.
