Mr. Alvin Wika, age 83, Clark died in a Clark care center on Saturday evening, March 18, 2006.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2006 at 1PM in the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark with Dr. Paul Larson officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery at Clark. The organist will be Dorothy Fuller with the congregation singing "Just As I Am" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary casketbearers will be his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. The active casketbearers are Randy Stevens, Rod Kluess, Brent, Darryl and Thayne Wika and Doug Davis.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 PM with the family present from 6-7 PM at the Furness Funeral Home at Clark. Visitation will continue on Thursday after noon at the Church.
He was born in Garfield Township, northwest of Clark, on July 18, 1922, the son of Nels and Lydia (Wee) Wika. He attended Garfield School through the 8th grade and then went to Clark High School.
On January 12, 1942 he was united in marriage to Darlene Stevens in the St. Paul Lutheran Church parsonage. Following their marriage they moved to Santa Monica, CA where he worked for Douglas Aircraft. They returned to Clark County about a year later and he farmed with his father. He later bought a truck and was a trucker for many years. The couple bought a farm in Mt. Pleasant Township where they have lived and farmed since. While farming, he began a career as an electrician, working for various firms in Clark, one being Bennett and Schulte and later he went to work for NorthWestern Public Service. He retired in 1981.
In addition to his love of the land as evidenced through his continuous activity on the farm until a short time ago, he also enjoyed traveling with his wife in their motor home, woodworking – inventing and then making most anything you could imagine and listening to country music. He will long be remembered for story telling and his never-ending sense of humor – having that "twinkle in his eye" when telling a good joke and his appreciation of a "fine" car. His love of John Deere tractors and hunting – being a "sure-shot" will not be forgotten. Second to none though, was his love of family, especially his wife, four daughters and all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark. Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife Darlene of Clark, daughters Dianne Hess of Plymouth, MN, Donette Warkenthien and husband Roger of Clark, Pamela Larson and husband Glen of Aberdeen and Nancy Kramp and husband Paul of Red Wing, MN. He also leaves 10 grandchildren, Lisa Zahn, Dan & Aaron Hess, Maria Kendle & Amy Warkenthien, Tanya Vanderlinde, Eric & Steven Larson and Weston & Tanner Kramp; 10 great-grandchildren, Brittney Kendle, Derek, Darin & Roan Hess, Haley, Austin, Hannah and Alec Zahn and Lydia & Thomas Vanderlinde. He also leaves a sister, Nora Davis and a brother, Maurice Wika and his wife Mary all of Watertown, sisters-in-law Marbeth Wika of Clark and Delores "Wink" Wika of North Platte, NB. Also surviving are half-siblings Lois Hankins and husband Stan of Albert Lea, MN, Sylvia Davis of Los Angeles, CA, Joyce Thies of Ames, IA and Glenn Wika and wife Cindy of Sioux Falls, SD. Preceding him in death were his parents, his step-mother, Lillian Wika, a great-grandson Tyler Kendle, brothers, Normal "Norm", Emmett and LeRoy and sisters Mildred Cochrane and Orva Schwartz.
