Hattie was one of two daughters of William Burnett Crawford and Margaret Bierbauer Crawford. Her older sister Florence Adelaid Crawford died at 18 in 1908, when Hattie was 12. Hattie's father remarried to Elizabeth Marie Eisert Crawford. Hattie was raised by her stepmother and her dad until he died in 1913 at the age of 57 when she was 17. This second marriage produced, for Hattie, four half brothers, Alfred Elex, Walter Clarence, William Donald and Norbert Burnett, and three half sisters, Cora Viola, Edna Marie Crawford Scott, and Gladys Elizabeth Crawford Stranahan. Cora died at the age of 12 in 1911. The rest of the family lived to old age.
