Charles, listed as a student in the 1860 Census, went to work in the Confederate Ordnance Department after the Civil War started. He enlisted as a Private in Company "A", 3rd Battalion, Richmond Local Defense Troops on 25 June 1863. He was elected 2nd Corporal on 31 March 1864, and 3rd Lieutenant on 8 February 1865.

After the War, Charles worked as a merchant, and married Annie Melville Lyon in Petersburg on 19 November 1872. They had at least three children: Charles Jr., John and Annie. He was a member of the R.E. Lee Camp (Richmond) and A.P. Hill Camp (Petersburg) of the United Confederate Veterans.

He died at 205 S. Boulevard of "Broncho Pneumonia," per Cemetery records, and was buried in the Moses Branch family plot. His grave was marked in 2019 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery".
