Howard R. Jackson, age 87, of 1300 North, died on Sunday October 31, 2004 at the Willow Bend Living Center in Muncie. He was born in Dunkirk on October 13, 1917 to Charles R. and Osa (Dickson) Jackson. He married Ada M. (Fuller), who is deceased. He was a lifelong resident of the Dunkirk area.

After graduation from Dunkirk High School in 1935, Mr. Jackson served in WWII with the United States Marines. A Corporal with the Marines, he participated in three campaigns, including Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima. A mortar squad leader, he was credited by his Marine buddies today with spotting a Jap dual-purpose anti-aircraft gun and directing fire from his battery of mortars, which knocked it out. For this accomplishment, an article about Howard appeared in the book, "Marines on Iwo Jima."

After service, Mr. Jackson worked at Indiana Glass as a machine operator, and then retired in 1981 from Kerr Glass after 23 years in machine repair.

Memberships include VFW Post #7081 Dunkirk and American Legion Post #227. A member for 59 years, Howard held many offices, including 1st Vice Commander, Adjutant, Trustee, and Service Officer. [He was also a] member of the Jay/Blackford Vojageur 40-8 Post #988, in which he held seven state offices, including Grand Chefdatrain and Cheminot.

He is survived by two sons, Gary E. Jackson and Philip D. Jackson, both of Dunkirk; a daughter, Phyllis E. Vasquez of Lockhart, TX; two brothers, Wayne Jackson (Vera) of Elkhart, and Marvin Jackson (Julie) of Muncie; one sister, Mary Harper of Muncie; three grandchildren, Michael E. Jackson (Christina) of Scott Air Force Base, IL, Andrew W. Jackson of Muncie, and Alexa R. Vasquez of Lockhart, TX; and one great-grandchild, Christopher M. Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ada M. Jackson (d.2000), one brother, Frank Jackson, and a sister, Hazel Jackson.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the M.J.S. Mortuaries-D.W. Jones Chapel in Dunkirk. Funeral Services will held Sunday, November 7, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at M.J.S. Mortuaries-D.W. Jones Chapel in Dunkirk, IN. Burial will be at the Dunkirk I.O.O.F. Cemetery, with Military Graveside Services conducted by American Legion Posts #227.

Memorials may be made to 40-8 Nurses Training Program in care of the funeral home or American Legion Dunkirk.
