MANSFIELD: Kind spirited, Shirley Wadsworth had a zest for life. Optimistic, her attitude was not dependent on her circumstances. Shirley Ann (Verner) Wadsworth, 78, of Mansfield passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in Ohio Health MedCentral Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

The daughter of James and Florence (Mounts) Verner, Shirley was born December 9, 1935 in Washington, Pennsylvania and was graduated from Trinity High School in 1953.

Shirley worked for National Ring and Leather Corp. and retired from Richland Child Support Enforcement Agency in 1999. She was a former member of Mansfield First Presbyterian Church. Shirley also served several years as a foster mother in both Cincinnati and Lubbock, Texas.

Shirley loved spending time each summer at the Wadsworth family cottage on Lake Huron in Kincardine, Ontario, Canada and each winter in Sarasota, Florida. A faithful Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes fan, Shirley always cheered for her beloved teams. Keeping an immaculate house, Shirley often tended to her yard and flower gardens.

A wonderful friend, Shirley was fun to be around. She enjoyed eating out with friends and watching movies.

She is survived by her son Michael Long of Grove City; grandson Caleb Long of Columbus; brothers James Donald Verner, and David (Cheryl) Verner and sisters Dorothy Wootton, Elizabeth (John) Baldwin, and Nancy (Bill) Stollar all of Washington, Pennsylvania; special aunt Velma Howie of London, Ontario, Canada; wonderful companion Richard L. Shasky of Mansfield; sister-in-law Marnie (Robert) Pugh of Marco Island, Florida and brother-in-law Rex Zimmerman of Virginia Beach, Virginia; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Wadsworth on November 28, 2001, brother Robert Verner, infant brother James Harold Verner.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 2 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. David Hartzfeld officiating. Calling hours will be at the funeral home from 1-2pm. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
