Luella Kathleen Hart McBride, 83, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009 in Franklin.

She was most proud of her family and her years as a president's wife at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

She was a talented quilter and gracious hostess at the churches and colleges she served with her husband of 63 years, Dr. Robert E. McBride.

Mrs. McBride was born to Seth Isaac and Tillie Edith Hart on March 14, 1925 in St. Bernice, IN. She was the fifth daughter in a family of six girls and two boys. For many years, her father was the minister at the Second Avenue Evangelical United Brethren Church in Terre Haute.

She graduated from Gerstmeyer High School in 1942 and attended Indiana Central College.

In 1944 she married Robert Edward McBride, and he served churches in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio before the couple returned to Indianapolis in 1954 where Dr. McBride taught at Indiana Central College and Mrs. McBride worked in the office of the Indiana Conference South of the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

They were both active in the University Heights United Methodist Church and she served as president of Faculty Wives.

In 1966, they moved to Reading, Pennsylvania where Dr. McBride was vice president of Academic Affairs of Albright College.

In 1979, they moved to Indianola, Iowa, where Dr. McBride was president of Simpson College. Mrs. McBride entertained many faculty and student groups in the president's home. She also served as president of the Simpson Guild and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Simpson College in 1987.

The couple retired to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas in 1987 where Mrs. McBride was a member of the choir and the worship committee at the Church of the Hills United Methodist Church and served as president, vice president and chaplain of Philanthropic Educational Organization, along with being a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization singers.

The McBrides returned to Indiana in 2001 and lived for the past few years at the Franklin United Methodist Community.

Mrs. McBride was preceded in death by Robert Edward McBride and by her seven siblings.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Bentley (Allen) of Seattle, WA; her son, Ronald McBride (Michele) of Indianapolis, IN; her son, Steven McBride (Diane) of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She will be missed by many friends and other family members including in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service celebrating Mrs. McBride's life will be on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at University Heights United Methodist Church, 4002 S. Otterbein Ave, Indianapolis. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
