Mary E. Hazel, age 93 of Savanna, Illinois, died on Monday, September 22, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral service. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial of her cremated remains will take place at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 10, 2014 in Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna. Memorials may be given to the Savanna Bible Church in Mary's memory.
Mary was born on January 21, 1921, the daughter of Elwood and Susan (Spaulding) Williams in Chadwick, Illinois. She attended Chadwick High School and graduated with the Class of 1939. She married Duane L. Hazel on August 2, 1946 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Duane died on July 15, 1958 in Savanna.
Mary was a Librarian for the Savanna School District for twenty seven years, before retiring in 1981. She was a longtime member of the Savanna Bible Church, Savanna. Mary was also a member of TOPPS and the Antique Club in Savanna. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and listening to music. Most of all, Mary cherished spending time with her family and friends.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Donna Engels of Borrego Springs, California; one son, Vaughn (Cathy) Hazel of Sitka, Alaska; nine grandchildren, Robbie, Brian, Christopher, Teresa, Amy, Kyle, Jared, Jonathan, and Aaron; two step grandchildren, Brian, Phillip, and Murphy; and four great-great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; two sons, Kenneth “Butch” Diehl and David Hazel; one son-in-law, William Engels; one daughter-in-law, Stella Diehl; and four brothers, Charles, Frank, Everett and Robert.
