It appears that Samuel took his mother's maiden name, which was Elizabeth Caine. On the application for military headstone the name Hugh S. Longbottom appears in pencil above Samuel E. Caine in the spot designated for name. In the Veterans Administration Master Index the name Hugh S or Samial E Longbottom or Caine is what is shown with a date of death of 11 May 1943.
