Norman A. Hep Houseal, 89, husband, father, grandfather and proud Maytown native, died peacefully Thursday, May 24, 2007, at Lancaster General Hospital. He and his wife Naomi Julius Houseal were married for 58 years and resided at 26 South Queen Street, Maytown.

A 1935 graduate of the former Maytown High School, Norman served with the US Navy Seabees in North Africa during WWII. Early in his career, he was employed by the Commonwealth of PA road maintenance, was a plumber, and read meters for the Maytown Water Company. He retired in 1984 from Kahn-Lucas of Lancaster as shipping foreman after 25 years of employment.

An active member of his church and community, Norman was the senior member of the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, where he served as elder, deacon and trustee. Proud of his service to his country, Norman held the honor of being the oldest member of the American Legion, Donegal Post #809, where he was chaplain. He also helped organized the Maytown Memorial Day Parade every year since its inception. Community minded, Norman loved and promoted all things Maytown from his membership in the Maytown Civic Association, to adorning the town square with Christmas decorations, a job he enjoyed each holiday season for over 50 years. During his childrens youth, he coached many community baseball and softball teams. He was a life member of the Maytown Historical Society, and was an active participant in the Bicentennial Celebration of 1960.

A man of deep family values, Norman treasured the tradition of Sunday family gatherings, annual family vacations in Ocean City and taught his family to value their church, family, Maytown and country. He supported all of his grandchildren by attending their many academic, music, and sports activities. A meticulous vegetable gardener, he also cared for his red, white and blue flowers surrounding his birdbath. Norman was an avid Phillies fan, but without hesitation would share his discontent with the managers, players, and umpires. He had an appreciation for poetry, which he learned as a young boy.

Born in the village of Maytown on July 8, 1917, he was the son of the late George Washington Houseal and Ellen Morton Houseal. He was the last of 11 children.

Normans presence will be deeply missed by his wife Naomi and four children, daughters: Linda Good, wife of the late Leon R. Good, and Carol, married to Scott Sener, both of Maytown; and sons, Philip, married to Pam (Reddig) Houseal of Landisville; and Randy, married to Deb (Graham) of Mount Joy, and eight grandchildren.

A Funeral Service honoring Normans life will be held from the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 Elizabeth Street, Maytown PA on Sunday May 27th 2007 at 3 PM with The Reverend Kay Rader. Interment to follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Normans family will receive friends at the Maytown Reformed UCC on Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maytown Reformed UCC., P.O. Box 457, Maytown PA 17550. Sheetz Funeral Home, Inc., Mount Joy.
