Born in North Adams on Aug. 1, 1946, son of Melvin Atwell and Janet Burr Atwell DeGrenier, he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Norman "Cobby" DeGrenier. He attended Clarksburg schools and McCann Technical School.
A Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, he was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal.
Mr. Atwell last operated a landscaping business in North Adams for several years. Before that, he worked for Statewide Funding as a mortgage originator and, in his younger years, was a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and a longtime supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous, leaving many close friends with that organization. He enjoyed fly fishing and was a proud Marine Corps veteran.
He leaves daughter, Cynthia S. Cote of Adams; a son, David C. Atwell and his wife, Deanna, of North Adams; a sister, Patricia Courtemanche of North Adams; a brother, Michael DeGrenier of Salisbury; four grandchildren, Kelsie Cote, David Atwell, Hadleigh Atwell and Payton Atwell; his former wife, Susan Lazarczyk of Adams, and nieces and nephews.
His brother Roger Atwell is deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Atwell will be Friday, Feb. 7, at 11 from First Baptist Church of North Adams. Burial will be in the spring in Clarksburg Cemetery.
