John moved to Missouri from Pennsylvania, at age 12 with his parents. When he was 14 years old, while working on the farm, he was kicked in the eye by a mule. He lost his right eye. As he got older and had to wear glasses, he would have the right lens frosted to cover his closed eye.

He married Elizabeth Frances Verkamp on September 16, 1902 in St. Agnes Church in Sarcoxie, Jasper County, Missouri.

After their marriage they moved to Charleston, Arkansas. Elizabeth was sickly so they moved back to Missouri. John's brother Frank was living in Oklahoma at the time, and wrote to John to come there. It was 1906 and they had two daughters. So they loaded their possessions on a train and started out. John rode in the stock car with his cattle and farm equipment and Lizzie rode in the passenger car with the children. The baby had colic and cried about the whole way. Other passengers suggested all kinds of home remedies but nothing seemed to work. The trip was long and trying.
The train went as far as El Reno, Oklahoma and they had to travel by wagon the rest of the way. They rented a farm on the west side of Hydro. Eventually they bought a farm southwest of Hydro in 1913 and lived there the remainder of their lives. He built their home.
John was a coal miner some but mostly farmed. He raised mostly cotton and wheat. He never used modern machinery, preferring his horses.
They had 6 children.
