Paul J. Jones
ROLAND PARK - Paul J Jones, 98, A construction engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, died after a short illness on Thursday (Nov 9, 2006) at St. Josephs Hospital.
He lived in Roland Park. Born in Hornell, he was educated at Hornell High School and the Mechanics Institute (Rochester Institute of Technology) in Rochester, where he received his degree in electrical engineering. After graduation in 1930, during the depression, he worked at various jobs as a day laborer and surveyor's assistant. In 1933,he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was employed in the Cascade National Forest in Idaho.
After the 1935 floods in southwestern New York State the Corps of Engineers established a field office in Hornell and Mr. Jones was employed as an assistant surveyor. Mr. Jones' career with the Corps eventually took him to Binghamton, Syracuse, and in 1947 to Baltimore. During World War II, Mr. Jones was involved in the construction of Army facilities in upstate New York.
In the Baltimore District Office Mr. Jones was responsible for construction of Army, Air Force, and civil works facilities, including flood control levees and dams. Among the projects which he actively managed was the Veterans Administration Hospital on Loch Raven Boulevard. Upon his retirement in 1972, he was chief of the Construction Division. Soon after retirement he was called back into services to manage flood recovery efforts along the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, Pa., after Hurricane Agnes struck the region. Mr. Jones has been recognized by the Baltimore District Office as one of their Distinguished Civil Employees.
Mr. Jones was a Registered Professional Engineer, a member of Society of American Military Engineers, and a member of the Rochester Institute of Technology Alumni Association.
His first wife, Helen Catherine Maglier of Canisteo, died in 1964. He married Nell O. Stoll of Baltimore in 1979.
Survivors include his wife, Nell O. Stoll Jones, three children from his first marriage, Marilyn R. Jones of Broomall Pa., Michael Jones of Springfield, Va., and Robert Jones of Lutherville, a sister, Irene Morris of Williamstown; nine stepchildren, Ellen Walsh of Fairport, Lela Jenkins of Chesapeake, Va. Nancy Stoll of Los Angeles, Calif., Mary Spencer of New York, N.Y., Jane Stone of Baltimore, Betsy Phillips of Pasadena, Calif., Joseph Stoll of San Diego, Calif., George Stoll of Los Angeles, Calif., and John Stoll of Parkton, Md.; 18 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
