John H. Cole was born July 28, 1848 in Providence, RI to Hanun Wilbur Cole and Abigail (Shaw) Cole. He attended Harvard Law School, receiving his LL. B. in 1872 and was admitted to the bar in Boston (1873), New York (1874) and at the US Supreme Court (1879). He started in private practice in New York City in 1880. In 1900 his law office was at 35 Wall St. and his residence was at 6 East 10th St.

In 1877 John Cole married Lucy May Smith. She died in 1882 soon after the birth of their only child and is buried with her parents in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

John Cole and Josephine Mcllvaine Hewson were married in 1885 in Oxford, England. He was active in many organizations including the NY Bar Association and the University Club, the New York Yacht Club, and the Harvard Club. John and Josephine were listed on the Social Register. They spent summers at their home and farm, Broadwater, in Southport, CT until 1920 and later summered on Narragansett Bay in Jamestown, RI.
