George Melton Baker was a son of Hamilton Gaither Baker b. Abt 1825 in Campbell Co., TN., and his 1st wife Mary B. Smith b. June 5, 1830, in Tennessee, d. Aug 18, 1849, in Indiana. Hamilton Gaither Baker died of disease on Aug. 7, 1863, at Fort Pickering in Memphis, Tennessee, during the Civil War. Hamilton G. Baker served in Company G. of 97th Indiana Infantry Regiment. His time of service was just shy of 13 months before he died of disease.
