Evelyn (Mrs. Tony) Bentler, 79, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Friday, September 30, 2011, at her home following a courageous battle with leukemia.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon on Wednesday, October 5th at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. that evening. A Christian Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church or to the Mt. Pleasant Public Library.

Born August 10, 1932, in West Point, IA, Evelyn was the daughter of Fred and Josephine (Groene) Dyer.
Evelyn graduated from St. Mary’s High School in West Point, in 1950, and then enrolled in Marycrest College in Davenport, IA. On March 28, 1954, she married Anthony “Tony” Bentler in West Point.

In 1952, Mrs. Bentler began her working career at the Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison. The Bentlers moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1955, where she assisted her husband in the operating of the Bentler Phillip’s 66 Station and Car Wash. Evelyn also worked as an assistant administrator for Pleasant Manor Care Center for nineteen years, retiring in 1995.

Mrs. Bentler was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where she taught Sunday School and served on a number of other committees. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and Ladies of Charity.
Evelyn was also a member of Chapter DD TTT. She was a volunteer at the Henry County Health Center Gift Shop and Information Desk. When her boys were young, she was a Den Mother and assisted with their activities. While wintering in Arizona, she volunteered at her grandchildren’s school. She served on the Henry County Election Board for many years, and was a volunteer for Hospice of Southeast Iowa for many years.

Evelyn enjoyed reading, traveling, working crossword puzzles and playing Bridge. Most of all she enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Tony Bentler; three sons, Roger (Pam) Bentler of Glendale, AZ, David (Staci) Bentler and Michael Bentler all of Scottsdale, AZ; and four grandchildren, Rhiana, Tony, Taryn and Tatum Bentler. Also surviving are two brothers, Fred Dyer of Houghton, IA, and Harold (Connie) Dyer of West Point, IA; one sister, Jane Schiltz of Davenport, IA; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Irvin Dyer and a sister, Ruth Mehmert.
