Elias Birkes was the son of Charles and Mary Birkes.
He married Lucinda Jane Loveall on 11 Jun 1846. He was 17 years old and she was 14.

Elias Birkes was killed during the Civil War in the Battle of Gadfly*. His body was brought back to his farm and buried there, a short distance from the log cabin. The house was located four and one-half miles northwest of Purdy and about a mile and fourth northwest of the Stone Prairie Lutheran Church. The house was purchased from Pinkney Haddock about 1855.
*NOTE: Gadfly was the previous name of the community of Corsicana (changed January 1870).
