Melvin was earlier married to Faye Hansen on 25 May 1954 in Kootenai, ID. They had a son Tommy Jo Arnes who died 13 Nov 1955 at age of 11 months 18 days in Spokane, WA; and another son James "Jim" Dale Arnes who died 28 Mar 2002 in Spokane, WA.
